Is there such a thing as a happy Monday? Maybe not, but my Monday was made a little better this week. How's that, you ask? Because yesterday I decided to join a few of my coworkers in practicing yoga on Pier 63 as part of the Wanderlust Yoga Festival. To be honest, I'm not usually one for yoga. I've tried it, I promise, but most of the time, I'm too wound up and fidgety to fully appreciate the calm and peaceful nature of it. I much prefer to dance until I drop in a Zumba class, run around the block a few times, or take a cycling class.
Back to the yoga. Since most of my coworkers were going, I thought I'd give it a try, too, which is how I found myself in downward dog on Pier 63 taking a yoga class with a roster of esteemed yoga instructors, including Kristin McGee (pictured at left), who's taught celebrities such as Tina Fey, Bethenny Frankel, and LeAnn Rimes Cibrian.
As part of a Yoga Aid initiative to raise money for different nonprofit organizations, the festival is taking place in different cities around the U.S. The all-day festival in New York included different yoga workshops, musical performances, and speakers.
I'm glad I went. Not only was the weather almost perfect (not a cloud to be seen), but I felt energized, refreshed, and ready to tackle the ever-growing pile of laundry that was waiting for me at my apartment when we finished. I also noticed when I woke up this morning that my back didn't hurt as much as it ordinarily does, which made for a happ(ier) Monday morning than usual.
My advice to you? Check here to see if your city is participating, and join in if you can. Besides yoga, each city's festival offers music and arts, as well.
Not a fan of yoga? Start your week off on a positive note by trying something different! Maybe you'll find a new routine you love, and maybe you won't. But either way, it can't hurt to jazz up your work week by pushing yourself a little.
