Analysis: Pulses (beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas) have been part of the human diet for centuries. Essentially every culture has a dish that is based on, or incorporates them, and with good reason, pulses are a good source of fiber, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, B vitamins and protein.
Contrary to popular belief, plant proteins do not have to be eaten at the same time for them to be of use to the body; no need to eat rice and beans in the same meal since all proteins are broken down into their building blocks, amino acids, and enter a general ‘pool’, from which the body will use which ever amino acids it needs. As long as a variety of protein is eaten throughout the day, you’re good to go.

Two things that stood out for me is the way their canned pulses are prepared. They use purified water to wash, soak, and cook them. By soaking them first, much of the gas producing carbohydrate is removed, making them easier to digest. The kombu seaweed helps to enhance the flavour of the peas but you won’t taste it. Of note, most of their canned pulses, including the Black Eyed Peas, don’t have any added sodium. One half cup only has 25 mg of sodium, barely worth mentioning.
The other point of interest is that since 1999, Eden canned pulses feature cans that are bisphenol-A or BPA free. Concerns about BPA are growing as research has demonstrated a potential ability to disrupt hormone levels in both men and women.
While Health Canada’s Food Directorate have concluded that current dietary exposure to BPA through food packaging uses is not expected to pose a health risk to the general population, including newborns and infants, consumers have expressed concern about a lack of choice when it comes to selecting canned foods that are BPA free.
Alternative: Choose dried pulses and prepare from fresh if you want to avoid excess sodium and BPA if you feel it’s important to do so.
Take it or leave it: For those who don’t mind paying the extra price or who don’t want to cook from scratch, this line of canned pulses is worth it.
