If you enjoy cooking or have a busy family, then your oak kitchen cabinets are probably in need of a good scrubbing. Grease drifts through the air and leaves a film on cabinets that dirt clings to, but you don’t want to use harsh abrasives that might damage the finish. Here are a few treatments you can use to keep the cabinets clean, grease-free and beautiful.
Simple dish soap can safely be used on all wood cabinets, even if they are painted. Pour some hot water in a bowl and add a tablespoon of dish detergent to cut through the grease. Dispose of the solution and make new cleaner as it become dirty and the suds start to fade.
Vegetable Oil and Baking Soda
Busy families leave a mess in their wake, and you don’t always have time to scrub the cabinets. If you have neglected the cleaning for a little while and there’s a greasy build-up on the cabinets now, then the dishwashing detergent may not be enough to cut the grease and leave the surface clean. Mix a solution of one part vegetable oil with two parts baking soda. Mix it with your hands or a whisk to dissolve the soda and form a paste. Apply it to the oak with a soft cloth, and use a toothbrush to scrub it into the little crevices. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it away with a clean cloth. If the slick oil feeling remains, use a sponge with a little dishwashing detergent to remove the oil.
The marvels of vinegar truly never cease. Mix a diluted vinegar solution using two cups of warm water and one cup of distilled white vinegar. Spray it on the cabinets and then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Continue spraying and wiping until the cabinets are sparkling clean and free of grease.
Murphy’s Oil Soap
Murphy’s Oil Soap has become a trusted household name because it effectively cleans wood without leaving a residue. Simply add a capful to a gallon of warm water and swirl it around to mix it. Soak a rag in the solution, wring it out and scrub the cabinets clean.
Treat them with Beeswax
If your cabinets do not have a high-polish polyurethane finish, then you can make them shine with beeswax. Available at your local home improvement store, beeswax polishes are easy to use and very effective. Once the cabinets are clean, apply the wax with a soft cloth. Following the directions on the container, allow the wax to soak in for a few minutes. Wipe it away with a soft cloth and buff it to produce a stunning shine that will make the cabinets look like new.
With these cleaning and care tips, you can keep your oak cabinets looking incredible. Grease won’t be a problem, and you will enjoy many years of service out of your cabinets. Clean them regularly to avoid serious scrubbing, and use the beeswax treatment on cabinets to restore a beautiful shine to the wood.
