Cherry wood is a popular building material for home furnishings and cabinetry. With its hint of red color, cherry wood stands out from traditional wooden items, and it looks elegant in almost any type of setting. Cherry is an especially nice choice in the kitchen since it makes the space warmer and more inviting for family members and guests. If you are thinking about buying or even making cherry kitchen cabinets for your own home, make sure that you understand how to care for this beautiful material. These tips can help to lengthen the lifespan of any new cherry cabinets you install in your kitchen.
Wipe Cherry With a Damp Cloth
The simplest way to clean the exterior surface of cherry cabinets is simply to wipe it down with a wet cloth. Although there are commercial cleaners on the market, you don’t need to splurge for these expensive products when a basic homemade solution will do just fine. Simply mix a few cups of hot water in a bucket along with a squirt of dish detergent. Using a soft rag or cloth, wipe down the front and side panels of the cabinets in your kitchen. Rather than allowing each panel to air dry, stop and dry the cabinets with another rag. This prevents any moisture from seeping into the wooden cabinets and causing damage.
Cleaning the Interior of Your Cherry Cabinets
Once a year, you should spend some time cleaning the interiors of your kitchen cabinets. The shelving may not be cherry wood, as some manufacturers use particle board since it is not visible when the doors are closed, but you should still proceed with caution. Start by removing all of the plates, dishes or glasses inside of the cabinets. Then, dust the shelves and the interior sides of the cabinets. If they are still sticky or greasy, use the same water and detergent solution as mentioned above to wipe down all the surfaces. Dry it completely, and then put all your items back on the shelves.
Using Polish or Oil Soap on Cherry Cabinets
Over time, the surface of your cabinets may begin to dull. If you want to restore their shine, occasional use of products like wood polish or oil soap can be appropriate. Before you use it liberally, however, test a small patch of the interior of one cabinet to make sure that there are no marks or stains that get left behind. Wait 48 hours, and if there are no problems then you can apply it over the entire cabinet. Don’t use wax, as this will cause an unattractive buildup.
Remove Scratches and Dings from Cherry Cabinets
If you do get the occasional scratch or dent on your cherry cabinets, a simple way to get rid of it involves a cotton bud and iodine. Simple dip the bud into iodine and coat the scratch with the liquid, and the scratch will disappear from sight.
Cherry cabinets can be a wonderful addition to any kitchen, and these tips will keep them looking fabulous for years to come.
