The Senator’s Sip

The Senator’s Sip Last night in the Republican Party’s response to President Obama’s State of the Union address, Senator Marco Rubio unintentionally added some dramatic flair to his speech when he paused to reach off-camera for a bottle of Poland Spring water. Now we have a response of our own to the “sip heard around the world.”

Dear Senator Rubio,

First, what an epic sip! When thirst strikes, Senator Rubio, it strikes regardless of where you are or what you’re doing. In this case it struck a few feet too many to your left during your formal response to the State of the Union. Yikes.

While we’re sure you weren’t intentionally plugging Poland Spring, we’d like to offer a few suggestions for your next on-camera appearance:

  1. Obviously, move the water closer to you.
  2. Also, ditch the plastic bottle and go with the sustainable option — tap water.

Not only is it cheaper—America’s tap water is better regulated than bottled water (which, incidentally, is increasingly from municipal tap water supplies anyway). And we can’t speak for Congress’ in-house recycling program, but elsewhere in the United States 75 percent of those plastic bottles end up in landfills. Plus, chemicals from the plastic bottles can leach into the water you’re drinking, and are potentially dangerous to your health.

You might now be thinking, “If the container could contaminate my water, how am I supposed to get my water on the go?” We’ve got your back, Senator. Food & Water Watch is sending you a reusable stainless steel water bottle so you too can enjoy the benefits of America’s tap water.

No thanks necessary. Just spread the word while you are sipping sustainably in a cozy congressional chamber.

Sincerely,

Food & Water Watch
